Public Service Loan Forgiveness for Healthcare Professionals

Public Service Loan Forgiveness Tips for Health Care Professionals

If you are a healthcare professional and you want to qualify for public service loan forgiveness (PSLF), here are the steps you need to take:

  • Work for a qualified employer: To qualify for PSLF, you need to work full-time for a qualifying employer. This includes government organizations, non-profit organizations, and certain other types of organizations. For healthcare professionals, this may include working for a government hospital or a non-profit health clinic.
  • Make qualifying payments : You need to make 120 qualifying payments on your federal student loans while working for a qualified employer to be eligible for PSLF. Qualifying payments are payments that are made on time and are for the full amount due under your repayment plan.
  • Enroll in an eligible repayment plan : To make qualifying payments, you need to be enrolled in an eligible repayment plan. This includes income-driven repayment plans, which are based on your income and can help lower your monthly payments.
  • Note, if you are on an income-driven repayment plan and think that you will qualify for PSLF, you should take action to reduce your adjusted gross income as much as possible. Maximizing pre-tax retirement plan contributions in favor of making Roth contributions isa great way to start.
  • Submit an Employment Certification Form : You need to submit an Employment Certification Form (ECF) to the Department of Education to confirm that you are working for a qualifying employer and to track your progress towards PSLF. You should submit an ECF every year or whenever you change employers.
  • Apply for forgiveness : After you've made 120 qualifying payments, you can apply for PSLF. You'll need to submit an application to the Department of Education, along with documentation to verify your employment and payments.

Keeping good records and documenting as you go will make it much easier and less stressful than trying to pull all your documentation together at the end of the 120 months. Many applications that would have otherwise qualified for forgiveness get rejected because the borrower didn’t keep good records and therefore couldn’t prove compliance with the requirements.

It's important to note that the rules for PSLF can be complex, and not all employers or types of loans may qualify. You should review the Department of Education's guidelines and consult with a student loan expert or financial advisor if you have any questions about your eligibility.
