Preparing for Your First Meeting with a Financial Advisor

Your first meeting with a financial advisor is an opportunity to start a conversation about your goals, priorities and financial future. While every financial advisor's process may differ, taking a little time to prepare can help you get the most out of your meeting.

Think about your goals

Before your appointment, consider what you'd like to accomplish. Are you planning for retirement? Saving for a child's education? Managing a recent life change? Having a clear sense of your priorities can help guide the discussion.

Gather key financial information

You don't need to have everything perfectly organized, but bringing information such as recent account statements, retirement savings, insurance policies, or a list of major assets and liabilities can provide a helpful starting point.

Be prepared to discuss your current situation

Your financial advisor may ask questions about your income, spending habits, family situation, retirement timeline and long-term objectives. Honest conversations can help create recommendations that reflect your unique circumstances.

Come with questions

Your first meeting is also your opportunity to learn more about the financial advisor and their planning process.

You may want to ask questions such as:

• What does the financial planning process look like?

• How often will we meet?

• What services do you provide?

• How will we work together over time?

Remember that planning is a process

One meeting rarely answers every question. Financial planning often evolves over time as your life, goals and priorities change. Your initial meeting is simply the first step toward helping build a strategy that reflects what's important to you.
