RMDs Are Required. But the Tax Strategy Is Up to You

Required Minimum Distributions, or RMDs, are an important part of retirement planning that can sometimes be overlooked until the end of the year.

For many retirees, RMDs begin at age 73, though the exact starting age can depend on your birth year and account type. Once they begin, these withdrawals are generally required each year from certain retirement accounts, including traditional IRAs and many employer-sponsored retirement plans.

The requirement itself may be straightforward. The tax impact is where planning becomes important.

Because RMDs are typically treated as taxable income, they can affect more than just your account balance. They may influence your overall tax picture, Medicare premiums, Social Security taxation, charitable giving strategy, and how you draw income from different accounts in retirement.

That is why RMDs should not be viewed as just another annual task.

They are a planning opportunity.

A thoughtful retirement income strategy may include coordinating withdrawals across taxable, tax-deferred, and tax-free accounts. It may also involve evaluating whether Qualified Charitable Distributions make sense, reviewing Roth conversion opportunities before RMD age, or adjusting withdrawal timing based on your broader financial picture.

The goal is not simply to take the required amount.

The goal is to make sure your retirement income strategy is working as efficiently as possible based on your needs, goals, and tax situation.

If you have not reviewed your RMD plan recently, now may be a good time to revisit it. Small adjustments made proactively can help create more clarity and confidence as you move through retirement.

Before year-end gets busy, ask yourself:

Are my retirement withdrawals working with my tax strategy, or against it?

Together, we can work to keep you on-track toward your financial goals. Request a consultation to learn more.
