Insurance Is More Than a Policy

When people think about financial planning, they often focus on investments, retirement accounts, and saving for future goals. While those areas are important, another component of financial planning is often overlooked: insurance.

Insurance is designed to help manage financial risks that could otherwise disrupt a family's plans and objectives. Yet many individuals don't review their coverage regularly or fully understand how their policies fit into their broader financial picture.

Life insurance is one example.

For some families, life insurance may provide financial support for a surviving spouse, children, or other dependents. For businessowners, it may play a role in succession planning, funding buy-sell agreements, or helping address business obligations in the event of an owner's death.

Disability insurance is another area that is frequently overlooked. Many people insure their homes, vehicles, and other assets, but their ability to earn an income may be one of their most valuable financial resources. A long-term disability could significantly impact financial goals if adequate coverage is not in place.

Long-term care planning is also an important consideration for many individuals and families. As healthcare needs evolve later in life, understanding available options can help individuals prepare for potential expenses and care needs.

Insurance needs often change over time. A policy purchased years ago may no longer reflect your current income, family circumstances, assets, or objectives. Major life events such as marriage, having children, purchasing a home, starting a business, or approaching retirement may create a need to review existing coverage.

One common misconception is that insurance and financial planning are separate conversations. In reality, insurance can be an important component of a comprehensive financial planning approach. Evaluating protection needs alongside investments, retirement planning, tax considerations, and estate planning strategies can help create a more complete financial picture.

The goal isn't simply to own insurance. The goal is to understand whether your coverage aligns with your current needs and supports the financial objectives that matter most to you.

Periodic reviews can help identify gaps, opportunities, and areas that may warrant further discussion as your financial life evolves.
