Am I Maximizing My Executive Compensation Package?

The offer letter looked great.

Higher salary. Better title. A clear step forward.

That was the part worth celebrating.

But as one executive and I reviewed the new role more closely, it became obvious that the salary increase was only one piece of the opportunity.

The rest was buried in the benefits guide.

There was a retirement plan match, an employee stock purchase plan, a pension benefit, an HSA, disability coverage, and additional tax-advantaged savings options.

Individually, none felt as exciting as the raise.

Together, they could influence the next several decades.

That is where many high earners unintentionally leave value behind.

A job change comes with new responsibilities, new systems, and dozens of decisions competing for attention. Benefits often get handled quickly during onboarding and then forgotten.

But those elections deserve more than a few rushed clicks.

A useful review shouldconsider:

• Whether the full employer match is being captured.
• How company stock fits with existing investments.
• Whether pension benefits change retirement projections.
• How the HSA may support current or future healthcare costs.
• Whether disability coverage protects the new level of income.
• Which savings opportunities complement the broader tax plan.

The goal is not to elect every benefit available.

It is to understand what each one is designed to do.

For high-earning professionals, total compensation is rarely just salary and bonus.
